Cambridge Tunnel Renovation
The Cambridge Tunnel renovation for the City of Edmonton provided an update to this integral pedestrian link connecting the ATB Building, Cambridge Building, and the Central LRT station. Maintaining parts of the existing space, the new architectural finishes were integrated with existing ones to create an exciting underground space that reflects a piece of Edmonton’s urban history.
The renovated space is clad with perforated metal panels running down one side of the tunnel, with graphics inspired by the tunnel’s location. These graphics are a compilation of maps and images that document Jasper Avenue at different points in its urban history, acting as a layered timeline. The opposite side of the tunnel is inspired by the river valley located on the south side of Jasper Avenue. The pixelated pattern of tiles references the various shades of green seen when walking through the river valley while the sun filters through the leaves overhead.
